Old and New Glock Model 78 Field Knives

Mon Mar 16 2009
I took a close look at the new Glock model 78 field knife. It is a lot different than my first one (green in the photos). The first Glock knife is from the late 1980s the black Glock knife is new 2008 (approx) manufacture. From a few feet away they look the same but up close side by side there are many differences. the Glock field knife sheaths are also quite different. The Glock Knife blade is made of phosphate-treated Spring steel HRC55. The newer version of the Glock Field Knife weighs 7.27 ounces. The Glock Model 78 (no saw on blade) has a 6-1/2 inch blade and is 11-1/2 inches overall

What is not so obvious in the photos are the differences in polymer these are made from. The older Glock Field Knife is a smoother green material, the newer 2008 version is a softer material that seems to grip the skin and does not feel as slippery as the older material.

You could bite the newer material in your teeth and it would not hurt, while it would hurt to do so on the older Glock Knife material

The older Glock knife was held in its sheath with a dimple on the polymer frog (belt loop) while the newer Glock knife is held even more securely with a clip on the outside of the sheath. I have not found an easy way to open the new Glock sheath with one hand yet.

The belt loop on the older Glock Field Knife (in green) is higher up the handle and has a hole for a lanyard or attachment point at the top. The older style belt loop does not open. The newer style Glock field knife sheath has a lower belt loop which opens at the bottom that fits belts up to 2-1/4 inches. The newer style is strong but more flexible that the earlier style. The older style Glock knife sheath has a drain hole / lanyard hole at the bottom below the tip of the blade while the newer style sheath has a lanyard loop on the inside of the sheath at the bottom near the knife tip. The large clip that holds the knife in place is easy to see from the side

From the back of the sheath the wider frog (belt loop) on the older Glock field knife (in green) is easy to see. Both knives are about the same length.

From the end the higher and wider frog (belt loop) of the older Glock Knife is obvious compared to the newer style in black.

The knives are also different in minor ways including the finish coating on the blade of the newer version. The older knife has a fine layer of rust. The cross bar on the older Glock Knife sweeps backward, while the newer version of the Glock Knife sweeps forward. Both versions have a bottle opener on the top of the blade

I had to try putting the old knife in the new sheath and new knife in the old sheath.. it did not work. The black knife did fit OK in the old sheath, but it does not lock. the old Glock knife does not have a place for the sheath lock to click into, so it does not insert all the way. The newer Glock Knives have the Glock logo on the handle, the older versions do not.

The reason why they bent the cross bar in the other direction is that now you can "catch" a strike with another knife with it, like you do with a sword. With an old model, you strike would not be caught but slip down the crossbar, eventually reaching your body, with the new model (and the now up bent cross bar), the strike gets caught and does not slip.

And of course, now you don't have to put off your belt to mount the sheeth on it.
